Golddigger Trust Launch Groundbreaking CORE Project in Sheffield Schools as part of SAFE Taskforce

We are excited to announce the launch of a groundbreaking new project commissioned by the Department for Education and Learn Sheffield to deliver interventions as part of the SAFE (Support, Attend, Fulfil, Exceed) Taskforce within Sheffield Secondary Schools.

The targeted support, delivered as part of a £30 million government investment, is part of a rollout of 10 ‘SAFE’ Taskforces across the UK. Sheffield has been identified as one of these target areas, investing in new schools interventions to work with the city’s most vulnerable young people.

Launched in January 2023, our team of Schools Specialists have been working across 10 identified schools in Sheffield, supporting students through our new custom programme, CORE, created in response to the SAFE Taskforce aims.

CORE is an interactive programme of group and individual work, focused on developing positive emotional wellbeing and executive function in an accessible and creative way. Utilising 1:1 mentoring, our award winning self-esteem programmes, and our brand new CORE programme of interactive games and challenges, students will be supported to develop their emotional wellbeing, sense of value and important ‘executive function’ skills. With a groundbreaking approach using self-esteem and emotional wellbeing support, the programme aims to achieve three main objectives:

Reduce behavioural issues - through our programme, we aim to allow the students to engage in fun activities and help them to discover more about themselves. This will in turn allow them to feel a sense of purpose and drive where they can have a more positive attitude.

Improve self-worth & self-esteem - as the students learn more about themselves, we aim to break down those lies they believe about themselves, and let them uncover their actual worth and value.

Improve prosocial attitudes & self-control - by giving the students a safe environment to explore and express their emotions, they will learn how to understand these as well as how to positively engage with their feelings and know how to have more control over them.

Beth Stout, CEO of Golddigger Trust said:

“It has been wonderful to work with Learn Sheffield to take hold of this opportunity and invest long term in the lives of some of Sheffield’s most valuable young people. Having spent a little time, early in my career, working in Young Offender’s Institutions, it is so exciting to get to pioneer this new approach to early intervention, seeking to disrupt the patterns of inevitability that we often see, and show these young people that they are worth so much more than they’ve been told. We’re so excited for young people to access the incredibly high quality sessions our Schools Specialists are delivering within schools and to be supported to develop the skills they need to meet their full potential.”

Since January 2021, we have helped 953 young people across Sheffield. Of these, 424 have been part of a course in schools.

96% of young people who have completed a self-esteem course said that they felt their self-esteem & self-worth had improved as a result of the course.

Speaking of the project, Children and Families Minister, Will Quince said:

“These taskforces are helping school leaders and vital support services work together to support some of the most vulnerable young people across the country.

“Through the work of these taskforces, combined with our ongoing SEND Review, the independent review of children’s social care, and our investment in Alternative Provision and other specialist support, this government is levelling up opportunities for all young people to help fulfil their potential and achieve better outcomes.”
